History of the Cigar Makers' International Union

The Cigar Makers International Union was formed in 1864 as the Cigar Makers National Union of the United States and became international in 1867 with the affiliation of Canadian locals. Samuel Gompers was instrumental in the growth of the union. The union merged with the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Workers Union in 1974.

Scope and Contents

Consists of incomplete records of the Cigar Makers' International Union, Local 291 (San Jose), including one ledger of minutes 1906-1912, which includes mention of relief efforts after the San Francisco earthquake, and one financial ledger, 1903-1907. Also included are various documents, found within the ledgers, including: resolutions adopted by The Federated Trades Council of Santa Clara County supporting the demands of the Laundry Workers Union, Local 33 (San Jose), demanding an 8 hour workday; an agreement between grocery employers and employees, dated 1903, requiring employers to only employ members of the Teamsters Local 35; a membership application; and other miscellany.
