Biographical sketch
Gobind Behari Lal was born in Dehli in 1889, He was a journalist and a member of the Ghadar Party who participated in the
Indian independence movement. Lal came to the States to study as a research fellow at University of California, Berkeley in
1912. He wrote for and was science editor at various Hearst newspapers, in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Lal shared
the 1937 Pulitzer Prize with four other journalists for their science reporting. Lal also wrote about history, philosophy,
politics, and the intersection of science and politics in India, the United States, and worldwide. He was a founding member
of the National Association of Science Writers. Lal died in 1982, shortly after writing his last article.
Summary
The bulk of this collection pertains to Lal's career as a science journalist. It includes small amounts of correspondence,
biographical materials, and materials related to professional conferences and organizations. There are drafts and manuscripts
of Lal's writings, and reprints and clippings of his published articles and the science column he wrote for the Los Angeles
and San Francisco Examiner newspapers. There are lots of duplicates in the Examiner files. The collection also includes research
notes and notebooks, and secondary source materials and subject files on topics in medicine, other sciences, and politics
in India, the United States, and worldwide. The research notes date primarily from the sixties and seventies, and were largely
taken from books and articles Lal read or conferences he attended. These files may include some drafts of his own work. Files
on his professional activities include materials related to conferences and the National Association of Science Writers (NASW).
