He wrote for and was science editor at various Hearst newspapers, in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Lal shared the 1937 Pulitzer Prize with four other journalists for their science reporting. He was a founding member of the National Association of Science Writers. Lal died in 1982, shortly after writing his last article.

The bulk of this collection pertains to Lal's career as a science journalist. It includes small amounts of correspondence, biographical materials, and materials related to professional conferences and organizations. There are drafts and manuscripts of Lal's writings, and reprints and clippings of his published articles and the science column he wrote for the Los Angeles and San Francisco Examiner newspapers. There are lots of duplicates in the Examiner files. The collection also includes research notes and notebooks, and secondary source materials and subject files on topics in medicine, other sciences, and politics in India, the United States, and worldwide. The research notes date primarily from the sixties and seventies, and were largely taken from books and articles Lal read or conferences he attended. These files may include some drafts of his own work. Files on his professional activities include materials related to conferences and the National Association of Science Writers (NASW).
