Scope and Contents
The collection consists of five series, comprised of three archival cartons and two folder series. Series 1 contains notes
and field notes relating to collecting trips and expeditions; also contains correspondence. Series 2 contains miscellaneous
materials, photograph, and photocopied materials assembled by Huey and other Museum staff. Series 3 contains Bard notebooks
(1916-1923) and manuscripts relating to bird censuses 1922-1924. Series 4 consists of a folder of photographs of Huey. Series
5 contains assorted field notes, clippings, lists (books, mammals of San Diego county), and other material.

Biographical / Historical
Laurence Markham Huey (1892–1963) was the Curator of Birds and Mammals at the San Diego Natural History Museum from 1923 to
1961. Born September 6, 1892 on a farm in San Diego County, he exhibited an early interest in the natural world, collecting
birds eggs as a small child. He left school early, continuing his education in the field with local naturalist W. S. Wright
and mammalogist Frank Stephens; in 1908 he was a student in Kate Stephens's naturalist class at the San Diego Natural History
Museum, and he joined the San Diego Society of Natural History in 1914. Prior to his appointment at the Museum, Huey worked
with ornithologist, mammalogist, and nature photographer Donald Ryder Dickey from 1913 to 1923. His main research was the
study of mammals and birds of California (especially Imperial Valley) and Baja California, Mexico. He also did field work
on mammals and birds in Utah and Arizona, in particular at the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Huey published extensively
on birds and mammals, describing over 80 species and subspecies. He died on June 11, 1963 in San Diego.
