Abstract: The Ralph Malcolm Boyd Collection comprises one scrapbook that contains a mixture of dated, undated, identified, and unidentified
photographs and newspaper clippings related to the life of Lodi, California, police officer, Ralph Malcolm Boyd. The scrapbook
affords insights into Boyd's career, as well as his vacations, cabin at Lake Tahoe, family, friends, and twenty-fifth wedding
anniversary.

Ralph Malcolm Boyd was born in Sutter Creek, California, in 1892. He is known to have worked in San Joaquin County as a yardman
for Southern Pacific Railroad while a young man. In November 1934, at the age of forty-two, he joined the Lodi Police Department,
where he served for more than twenty-two years. The holder of Badge No. 1, Boyd patrolled from a motorcycle and issued parking
citations in Lodi's business district. He retired in 1956 after a short career in the City's Finance Department. One year
later, he took up police duties again, this time with the Dixon, California, Patrol System. Boyd died in Livermore, California,
in 1969, leaving behind his wife, Leona Ida Powell Boyd (1903-1991).
Off duty, Boyd was active throughout the Lodi community. He spoke to various clubs on the history of the Lodi Police Department,
promoted Lodi's Wine and Grape Festival, and belonged to various fraternal organizations, including the American Legion Post
22, the Lodi Policeman's Association (of which he was president in 1953), the Lodi Auxiliary Police Officers Club, the Shriners,
the Oakland chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon (a law enforcement fraternity), the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 634, and Lodi Elks
Lodge 1900.
The Ralph Malcolm Boyd Collection spans a period that started in 1930 and ended in 1968. It includes photographs, newspaper
clippings, and other documents assembled into a scrapbook. Additional photographs related to Boyd can be found in the Photograph
Collection of the San Joaquin County Historical Museum.
