Collection Scope and Content Summary
This collection includes materials that document lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and
queer (LGBTQ) activism in Orange County.
More specifically among the materials in the collection are newspaper clippings documenting
a confrontational encounter in 1993 between Orange County LGBTQ activists, including Karen
Hight, and Reverend Lou Sheldon on a plane on the way to Orange County from the March on
Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi-Equal Rights and Liberation. The March on Washington for
Lesbian, Gay and Bi-Equal Rights and Liberation took place in Washington, D.C. on April 25,
1993. It was the third march for lesbian and gay rights in the United States. The first took
place in 1979 and the second in 1987. Sheldon is the founder and at the time was the head of
the Traditional Values Coalition, an anti-gay American Conservative Christian organization.
At the time Sheldon was the head of the anti-gay Traditional Values Coalition. At the time
of the plane incident, LGBTQ activist Karen Hight was an advertising representative for the
Lesbian News, and a staffer with the Orange County edition of the Los Angeles Times.
Some materials in the collection include LGBTQ magazines, such as Blade and LN: The Lesbian
News, and press releases and promotional material for the 1994 Orage County Cultrual
Pride.
