Biography/Administrative History
The New York native and Harvard graduate Bernard Vorhaus (1904-2000) was a director of thirty-two films. He began his career
in the 1920s as a writer and moved into directing during the 1930s and 1940s. He first lived in Hollywood and then England
and then moved back to Hollywood for work. In 1951, he was named as a Communist during HUAC hearings. He then settled permanently
in England with his family and left the film industry.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection contains scripts and treatments of feature films from 1930s, most of which Vorhaus worked on. Titles include
Federal Man-Hunt, Way Down South, Man of Conquest, Escape to Paradise, 10th Ave Kid, Meet Dr. Christian, and Professor, Beware!
Treatments are from writers Hebert Clyde Lewis, Michael Hogan, Reginald Long, Ian McLellan Hunter, Judge Ben B. Lindsey (Kids
Judge), Madeleine Ruthven and Edgar Charles Anderson. Lastly, the collection includes a galley copy of the novel A Child of
Our Time by Odon von Horvath and a syllabus for a Dramatics class at USC.
