Description
This collection contains administrative documents and photographs from various MIS Veteran clubs throughout the United States, but mainly from Southern California. It is mainly paper documents but there are also some photographs, books, DVD's, and VHS tapes. Most of the materials are directly from club meetings and events. However, there is some secondary source material relating the histories of Japanese American soldiers.
Background
Catherine (Cathy) Tanaka was born in Tokyo during the U.S. Occupation of Japan post WWII. She graduated from UCLA with a BA in French in 1972 and studied the Japanese language/culture in Japan from 1974-1975. She has continued her father, Soichi's, legacy at Fukui Mortuary as secretary and treasurer. She is also licensed as a Funeral Director and Pre-need Counselor. She volunteers with various Japanese American veteran organizations in Southern California. She has been secretary to the Military Intelligence Service Association of Southern California since 1981, and secretary to the National Japanese American Veterans Council since 2004. She has served on the Board of Directors with the Go For Broke National Education Center and was the MIS SoCal representative of the Nisei Veterans Coordinating Council.
