Description
This small collection chiefly contains handwritten and printed governmental documents related to the reign of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico from 1864 to 1867, as well as two photographs of Maximilian and his wife Carlota and later 20th century newspaper clippings.
Background
Austrian archduke Maximilian I (Fernando Maximilano in Spanish) (1832-1867) was the only emperor of the Second Mexican Empire, reigning from 1864 until he was executed on June 19, 1867. He was married to Carlota (1840-1927), Empress consort of Mexico.
