Biography / Administrative History

A fifth-generation son of Calaveras County and the last of the Stevenot family line, Barden Stevenot was born in Angels Camp in 1936, the son of Edward Stevenot and Cornelia Barden. He graduated from Bret Harte High School in 1954 and in 1959 from Sacramento State University, with a degree in cultural anthropology. He then served in the U.S. Navy as an explosive ordinance disposal unit diving officer in Hawaii and the Pacific.
Returning to civilian life, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Barden served as vice-president and chief operating officer of Kirkwood Meadows, where he assisted in establishing the ski resort and subdivision of that name.
In the late 1960s, Barden purchased the Shaw Ranch on San Domingo Creek near Murphys, and eventually re-established a vineyard. In the early 1980s was key the reopening of a gold mine that had been associated with his family for generations, the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corporation. In the 1990s, Barden then became the point man for the Greenhorn Creek golf estate development in Angels Camp.
Barden died at his home in Murphys on October 8, 2017, with his wife Deana "Annie" by his side. As was quoted about his grandfather, Calaveras County has lost "a well-known, rancher, miner, and conservationist."
