Description
This collection is comprised of park newspaper clippings, scrapbooks and Yosemite National Park Press releases, 1920 - 1988.
The bulk of the materials date from 1920 to 1940.
Background
Yosemite National Park staff began collecting newspaper articles about the park from local, regional, and national newspapers
and placing them into scrapbooks beginning at least as early as 1920 in order to document the news coverage of park related
events and issues. In the 1950s, methods of record keeping changed, and staff began arranging documents according to the new
agency mandated alphanumerical filing system. Therefore, the newspaper clippings from 1962-1987 were no longer placed in bound
scrapbooks, but rather affixed to paper and filed according to the new filing schema. From 1981 forward, the Media Affairs
Office took over management of the news clippings, sending them to the Yosemite Research Librarian who added her articles
and consolidated the collection. The reason for the gap in newspaper clippings from 1939-1961 is unknown.
