Abstract: Charles Herman Hubbell was an American commercial aviation artist. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1899 he became interested in
aviation at an early age by building model airplanes. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War I and assisted
in designing naval aircraft. After the war, he attended the Cleveland School of Art until he graduated in 1922. Hubbell began
a career as a commercial artist for companies such as Woodroot Hair Tonic, Lucky Tiger, and Campbell Soups. He is best remembered
for his aviation artwork in annual calendars from 1941-1969 commissioned by Cleveland-based aircraft and automotive company
Thompson Products Inc. 2 Hubbell's work is widely recognized among aviation circles and has featured in corporate boardrooms,
world capitals, and the White House.

Biographical / Historical
Charles Herman Hubbell was an American commercial aviation artist. Born in
Cleveland, Ohio in 1899 he became interested in aviation at an early age by
building model airplanes. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War
I and assisted in designing naval aircraft. After the war, he attended the
Cleveland School of Art until he graduated in 1922.
Hubbell began a career as a commercial artist for companies such as Woodroot
Hair Tonic, Lucky Tiger, and Campbell Soups. He is best remembered for his
aviation artwork in annual calendars from 1941-1969 commissioned by
Cleveland-based aircraft and automotive company Thompson Products Inc.
Hubbell's work is widely recognized among aviation circles and has featured in

Scope and Contents
The production of the calendars in the collection are from 1944-1959. The
collection consists of annual aviation calendars Hubbell painted for Thompson
Products, Inc. located in Cleveland, Ohio. The calendars depict a history of
aviation through a series of relevant themes/styles of airplanes.

calendars include images of pioneer aviation pilots from the 1910s, airplanes
from World War I, World War II, and the United States Air Force Fiftieth Year
Anniversary.
