Scope and Contents

This series documents projects within Sacramento's city limits. It is broken up into subseries based on project areas and districts, commercial and industrial properties, public properties, and residential properties.
 

Subseries 1.1. Project areas and districts

Scope and Contents

This subseries documents project areas and historic districts within the city of Sacramento. Folders typically contain historic building survey forms, photos of properties, field notes, historical research on areas and buildings, maps, plans, planning documents, meeting records, correspondence, environmental impact reports (EIRs), historic resource reports, and other reports. Some include applications for the national historic register.
Larger projects in this series include the Downtown Infill, K Street Corridor, R Street Corridor (including the Warehouse Artist Lofts/WAL), Richards Boulevard, Sacramento Survey III, and Sacramento's underground and hollow sidewalks.

Arrangement

This subseries is arranged alphabetically by project area name. Within the larger projects that have folders on specific properties, property folders are arranged by address, starting with numbered streets and avenues, followed by lettered streets, and then named streets. The names of prominent buildings are included with the address in the folder title.

Subseries 1.2. Commercial and industrial properties

Scope and Contents

This subseries is made up of surveys of commercial and industrial properties, including businesses, churches, cemeteries, and hospitals. Each property's record usually contains at a minimum a historic resource survey form, while many also contain photos of properties, field notes, historical research, maps, plans, planning documents, meeting records, correspondence, environmental impact reports (EIRs), historic resource reports, and other reports. Some also include applications for inclusion on historic registers and preservation certification.

Arrangement

Folders are arranged by address with the property's original or most well-known business name in parentheses after the address. Addresses are ordered numerically and by street name, beginning with numbered streets and avenues, followed by lettered streets, and then named streets. Intersections without specific addresses are listed before properties with address numbers. The end of the series includes larger properties not associated with one address: North Natomas drainage and levee projects, Southern Pacific Railyards, and Sutter Hospital.

Subseries 1.3. Public properties

Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of surveys of public properties, including city, county, state, and federal buildings. Each property's record usually contains at a minimum a historic resource survey form, while many also contain photos of properties, field notes, historical research, maps, plans, planning documents, meeting records, correspondence, environmental impact reports (EIRs), historic resource reports, and other reports. Some also include applications for inclusion on historic registers and preservation certification. Some of the larger projects in this series include Memorial Auditorium, City Hall, the Federal Building/Post Office on I Street, Sacramento Library Plaza, the Old Sacramento County Jail, several city firehouses, and the California State Food and Agriculture, Education, and Library and Courts buildings.

Subseries 1.4. Residential properties

Scope and Contents

This subseries contains surveys of residential properties. Each property's record usually contains at a minimum a historic resource survey form, while many also contain photos of properties, field notes, historical research, maps, plans, planning documents, meeting records, correspondence, environmental impact reports (EIRs), historic resource reports, and other reports. Some also include applications for inclusion on historic registers and preservation certification.

Arrangement

Folders are arranged by address. When applicable, the property's name, or original or most well-known owner's name, is in parentheses after the address. Addresses are ordered numerically and by street name, beginning with numbered streets and avenues, followed by lettered streets, and then named streets.

Series 3. Projects outside of Sacramento County

Scope and Contents

This series documents properties outside of the city of Sacramento and Sacramento County. A large number of these properties are located in counties adjacent to Sacramento County; the rest are from throughout Northern California, with a few properties from the Central Coast, Southern California, and Nevada. Projects documented include residential, commercial, industrial, and public properties; historic districts; and project areas. Folders contain historic building survey forms, photos of properties, field notes, historical research on areas and buildings, maps, plans, planning documents, meeting records, correspondence, environmental impact reports (EIRs), historic resource reports, and other reports. Some include applications for the national historic register.

Scope and Contents

This series contains reference and research materials related to more general subjects and not connected to a specific project. Topics include specific Sacramento areas, cemeteries, businesses, and people; preservation and restoration best practices and glossaries; architectural styles and glossaries; and historic resource survey guidelines and methodology. Much of this material consists of photocopies of original reference material, and much of it is undated. Dates are not included for photocopies of dated older material. This series also includes maps not related to specific projects, and administrative material related to Historic Environment Consultants, such as resumes, invoices, letterhead templates, and company profiles. Series 5. Paula Boghosian's other projects

Scope and Contents

This series consists of two subseries with material related to projects Paula Boghosian worked on outside of her role in Historic Environment Consultants. The first subseries documents the creation of Boghosian's book "Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium: Seven Decades of Memories," published in 1997. This includes research and development, interview notes, manuscript and layout drafts, photographs, marketing and publicity, and printing information.
The second subseries documents other projects Boghosian has worked on, including the Sacramento Historic Home Tour, Sacramento walking tours, the State Historical Resources Commission, historic preservation guidelines, and the book "Vanishing Victorians," which Boghosian co-wrote in 1973, along with other projects related to the book that date up to 2013. Talks given by Boghosian are also included in this series.
Both subseries are arranged alphabetically.
