    Acquisition Information

The majority of the papers were donated to the San Jose Historical Museum or the City of San Jose by Elizabeth Madison Braly at some point between 1962 and 1964. Some of the material may have been donated to the city of San Jose after Braly's death circa 1968.

    Biography/Administrative History

Elizabeth Madison Braly was the daughter of James Madison Braly and Susan Isabella Braly, and sister to Bertha Hyde Braly. James M. Braly was a native of Missouri who originally came to California in 1850. He farmed in Santa Clara County on and off until 1864, when he settled in San Jose and opened up several businesses. In 1881 he left for Fresno, where he was involved in real estate. His wife Susan Isabella Braly was the daughter of Rev. John Eusebius Braly and Susan Hyde Braly. The Bertha Hyde Braly scholarship at Stanford University was created by sister Elizabeth Madison Braly in her honor.

    Scope and Content of Collection

At least half of the papers are original documents -- either correspondence between Elizabeth Madison Braly and her close family member, primarily sister Bertha (d. 1913) and mother Susan; or family records. The remainder of the material is genealogical research compiled by Elizabeth Braly. The collection includes an original edition of John Hyde Braly's Memory Pictures, given to his sister Susan in 1912.
