Series 7: Audio recordings: copies of Lomax Library of Congress Haiti field recordings (seven instantaneous discs) 1937

Scope and Contents

These discs are copies of field recordings from an expedition in Haiti conducted by Alan Lomax, his fiancee Elizabeth Lyttleton Harold, and his assistant Revolie Polinice for the Library of Congress in 1936 and 1937. These copies, all of which are from 1937, were of specific titles requested by Comhaire-Sylvain in 1942, and were duplicated on fragile glass-core discs (due to war-time rationing of aluminum, which is what the original recordings were recorded on).
Lomax writing to Comhaire-Sylvain 10/30/1942: "I am afraid both the Rosenwald idea and the duplication of your records have been delayed due to the fact that I have changed jobs recently going in to the Office of War Information. This morning, however, I called the Library to urge them to send you the estimate on the records you want duplicated." --Cohen, Ronald D., ed. Alan Lomax, Assistant in Charge: The Library of Congress Letters, 1935-1945
While most or all of the Lomax Haiti recordings have been commercially issued on 2009's "Alan Lomax in Haiti" box set (and are streamable to Stanford users at https://search.alexanderstreet.com/search?searchstring=%22Alan+Lomax+Haiti+Collection%22), it is interesting to note which recordings Comhaine-Sylvain wanted reference copies of. It was also thought possible that these discs, duplicated five years after the originals were created, might be less worn, but this is unfortunately not the case. These discs were digitized, however.
