Chao Tze-chi held multiple key positions within the government and the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), served as advisers to four presidents of Taiwan: Chiang Kai-shek, Yen Chia-kan, Chiang Ching-kuo, and Lee Teng-hui, and was President of the World Anti-Communist League (later renamed World League for Freedom and Democracy). The Chao Tze-chi papers includes over 60 volumes of personal diaries, ranging from the late 1940s to the early 2010s, Chao's personal files and certificates, photos of his political and diplomatic activities, news clippings, books, and other miscellaneous materials.

Chao Tze-chi was born in Rehe Province in Northeast China. He graduated from Nankai University in Tianjin and then from the Republic of China Military Academy. Between 1937 and 1945, Chao fought in the Sino-Japanese war. In 1948 he was elected member of the Legislative Yuan. In 1949, Chao retreated to Taiwan along with the Chinese Nationalist government. Between 1950 and 1989, he held multiple key positions within the government and the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and served as advisers to four presidents of Taiwan: Chiang Kai-shek, Yen Chia-kan, Chiang Ching-kuo, and Lee Teng-hui. In 1989, Chao served as President of the World Anti-Communist League (later renamed World League for Freedom and Democracy), a position he held until 1999. He played a crucial role in promoting Taiwan's track-II diplomacy in the 1990s; the most important achievements of which include cementing Taipei's relationship with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile in India. Chao died in Taipei in August 2020.
