Biography/Administrative History

The Pacific Century is a ten-part documentary series about the political and economic history of the Asia-Pacific region in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A co-production of The Pacific Basin Institute and Jigsaw Productions, the series recounts such aspects of modern Asian history as industrialization, Western imperialism, nationalist and revolutionary struggles, the rise of capitalism, and pro-democracy movements. The series also featured original interviews with numerous figures of historical importance, including Vo Nguyen Gap, Akira Kurosawa, and Beate Sirota Gordon. The Pacific Century was aired on public broadcasting networks throughout the United States and Canada throughout the 1990s. The series won the 1993 News & Documentary Emmy Award for Outstanding Historical Program. The series was accompanied by a companion trade book entitled The Pacific Century: America and Asia in a Changing World, written by Frank Gibney, and a college telecourse, Pacific Century: The Emergence of Modern Pacific Asia.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains correspondence, production files, research materials, licensing and rights documents, foundation inquiry files, and photographs relating to the production of The Pacific Century documentary series. The bulk of the production files are interview transcripts and scripts from the ten episodes in the series. The scripts document recorded conversations with prominent historical figures, including Kim Dae Jung, Kiichi Miyazawa, Vo Nguyen Giap, Dai Qing, Yasuhiro Nakasone, Akira Kurosawa, Charles Kades, Beate Sirota Gordon, and Lee Kuan Yew.
