The Committee for Contemporary Values (formerly the Committee for Non-Traditional Family Values) was a short-lived group formed in 1992 under the auspices of Roberta Achtenberg in response to Governor Wilson’s anticipated veto of AB 3825, a comprehensive piece of civil rights legislation. AB 3825 would: prohibit discrimination based upon economic status; award damages in cases of housing and employment discrimination; throw out ‘English-speaking only’ rules, prohibit discrimination in employment and housing for persons with physical handicaps; and prohibit all arbitrary discrimination by business establishments. In addition to soliciting support from HIV-Related and Gay and Lesbian Community Service and Political Organization and national, state and local public officials for the bill, the group organized a rally for the day following the anticipated veto of other bills: AB 2601 (which would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation), AB 3019 (a lesbian/gay rights bill) and a proposed needle exchange program. The collection includes contains letterhead, proposed media/public-relations strategies, agendas and notes on the organization’s meetings, drafts of the press releases, and drafts of the action letter sent to officials (along with a mailing list of recipients), the flyer, and the letter faxed to community and political groups.
