    Biography/Administrative History

    Paul D. Hardman was a World War II Navy vet and a longtime activist for LGBT veterans. He was born in New York City in 1923. In 1985 he founded the Alexander Hamilton Post 448 of the American Legion in San Francisco, which was the first predominantly LGBT post in the nation. He was also one of the founders of the Pride Foundation and the publisher and editor of California Voice. Hardman died at the age of 72 in San Francisco in 1996.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    This collection documents the political and professional life of activist Paul D. Hardman. It includes correspondence, research notes for Hardman’s book "Homoaffectionalism: Male Bonding from Gilgamesh to the Present," materials relating to the Alexander Hamilton Post of the American Legion, legal papers, and subject files. It also contains some materials from the Pride Foundation and Hardman’s newspaper, "California Voice." The subject files relate primarily to gays and lesbians in the United States military. Legal papers consist of anti-discrimination lawsuits filed by the Pride Foundation and the Alexander Hamilton Post. Carton 1 contains correspondence, 1975-1995; book and research material, 1982-1986; materials related to the Alexander Hamilton Post 448, 1984-1995, California Voice, 1979-1984, and Hardman’s political and professional affiliations, 1975-1994; and subject files, 1980-1994. Box 1 has subject files, 1982-1994 and legal papers, 1973-1985.
