Historical or Biographical Note
In 1920, George Gillies Sharp, former Chief Surveyor of the American Bureau of Shipping, entered the private sector by opening
a naval architectural firm in New York City. The George G. Sharp Company pioneered the modernization of ship fire control,
and was commissioned by the Department of Commerce to design "standard types" of merchant ships, including the C4's. During
WWII, the George G. Sharp Co. was heavily involved in the emergency shipbuilding program. The firm was officially incorporated
in 1951.
