Series 1: Photographic Scrapbook 1936-1949

Language of Material: English

Physical Description

1 Box, 7x 11 scrapbook, 60 4x5 black and white photographs. The physical scrapbook is a souvenir leather bound book held together by leather ties and snap closures. It is titled “Snapshots of Yosemite National Park” and has the embossed image of a grizzly bear on the cover. The leather cover is in good condition, but the individual scrapbook pages are torn near the punch holes and on the edges of the paper. The original photographs were set-in using photo corners and are not secure. The original photographs have been removed and rehoused in protective enclosures and folders according to the original order of the scrapbook. The interior pages include hand written captions and acid free photocopies have been placed in their original position so that researchers can easily see where the original photographs were placed in the physical volume.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Yosemite National Park Photographic Scrapbook Collection documents the park from 1936-1949. It is comprised of 61 photographs that depict the geology, wildlife, and human culture of the park in that era. Many of the photographs are geological points of interest such as Half Dome, Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Cathedral Spires, Glacier Point, Badger Pass, Mirror Lake, El Capitan and the Merced River. Most of the photographs have captions and brief identifying hand written descriptions. The creator is unknown but was likely a visitor to the park and took the photographs as a hobby, not as a professional photographer. This collection of photographs demonstrates the increasing interest in maintaining the integrity of the natural beauty of the United States during the 1930s and 1940s.
