Immediate Source of Acquisition
Gift of Frederick J. Winch, April 1981.
Dr. Augustus G. Holloway studied medicine at Western Reserve College, and in the late 1850s
practiced medicine in Allen County, Ohio. In 1864, he served as assistant surgeon of the
151st Regiment of Ohio National Guard Infantry and later became acting brigade surgeon.
Holloway was mustered out in August 1864; in April 1865, he enlisted as a private to Company
E of the newly organized 197th Regiment of Ohio Infantry and served as steward of the
brigade hospital. The regiment was posted on duty at Washington and Alexandria, then moved
to Dover, Delaware. In July 1865 the company was on guard duty in Baltimore, Maryland; it
was mustered out on July 31, 1865. After the war, Holloway returned home to Ohio and
continued to practice medicine.
The collection contains the Civil War letters from Augustus G. Holloway to his wife, with a
few requisitions, reports, and other military documents. It also contains a small number of
family letters, including a letter from Holloway's sister describing the reaction to
secession in Paris, Texas, a notebook with recipes and home remedies, miscellaneous tax
receipts, bills, invoices, and land deeds. Also included is a letter written on September
21, 1862, by an Ohio soldier, a relative of Dr. Holloway's, describing the 2nd Bull Run
campaign and discussing war politics.
Processed by Harriet McLune in approximately 1985; in February 2024, Gayle M. Richardson
created the finding aid.
Arranged chronologically.
