Josephine Wright Chapman was born in 1867 in Fitchburg, Mass. She began her architectural career by apprenticing with Clarence Blackall and his firm Blackall, Clapp, and Whittemore in Boston, in 1892. In 1897, she opened her own firm and designed Craigie Hall at Harvard University (1897), the New England Building for the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY (1901), the Worchester Woman's Club in Worchester Mass. (1902). In 1907, she moved to New York City and designed numerous houses in the Douglas Manor section of Queens. After finishing one of her largest private commissions, the Hillandale estate in Washington, DC, she retired from architecture and moved to Europe in 1925. She died in Bath, England in 1943.
The drawings of the Carrington house on East Valley Road in Montecito, Calif. consist of mostly blueprints, with a few drawings on brown paper. 7 graphite on heavy paper drawings of full size interior details and a plan for the motor court; 12 blueprints of elevations, full size interior details, and garden fountain and gate plans; 10 blueprints of floor plans and elevations for garage and chauffer's cottage, gardner's cottage, and servant's quarters. Also included are two sheets of alterations done by Carleton Winslow in 1924, one sheet of alterations by Jack Boydston in 1970, and two sheets of exterior alterations done possibly by Windsor Soule in 1919.
