Biographical/Historical note
Josephine Wright Chapman was born in 1867 in Fitchburg, Mass. She began her architectural career by apprenticing with Clarence
Blackall and his firm Blackall, Clapp, and Whittemore in Boston, in 1892. In 1897, she opened her own firm and designed Craigie
Hall at Harvard University (1897), the New England Building for the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY (1901), the Worchester
Woman's Club in Worchester Mass. (1902). In 1907, she moved to New York City and designed numerous houses in the Douglas Manor
section of Queens. After finishing one of her largest private commissions, the Hillandale estate in Washington, DC, she retired
from architecture and moved to Europe in 1925. She died in Bath, England in 1943.
Scope and Contents note
The drawings of the Carrington house on East Valley Road in Montecito, Calif. consist of mostly blueprints, with a few drawings
on brown paper. 7 graphite on heavy paper drawings of full size interior details and a plan for the motor court; 12 blueprints
of elevations, full size interior details, and garden fountain and gate plans; 10 blueprints of floor plans and elevations
for garage and chauffer's cottage, gardner's cottage, and servant's quarters. Also included are two sheets of alterations
done by Carleton Winslow in 1924, one sheet of alterations by Jack Boydston in 1970, and two sheets of exterior alterations
done possibly by Windsor Soule in 1919.
