Description
This collection primarily contains approximately one thousand letters between Hope Osborne Butler (1918-1957) and Jonathan Glover Butler (1917-1984) during the Second World War. The Butlers, married in 1942 in Massachusetts, wrote to each other every day while Jonathan served in the Navy in the South Pacific from January 1944 to August 1945.
Background
Hope Osborne (1918-1957) and Jonathan Butler (JB, JGB, or Jonnie; 1917-1984), both from Massachusetts, met and married there in 1941 and 1942, respectively. Jonathan received Naval training at Fort Schuyler in the Bronx, New York, while Hope worked for Time, Inc. They then lived together for four months in the San Francisco area while Jonathan received further training in Mare Island and San Bruno. Jonathan was deployed to the South Pacific in January 1944 and Hope returned to Massachusetts. They wrote to each other every day until Jonathan returned in August 1945.
