Biography / Administrative History
Paul Fussell was an attorney and corporate lawyer who served as a trustee of Pomona
College from 1943 to 1969. Born in 1895 in Pasadena, California, Fussell attended the
University of California, Berkeley where he received his B.A and J.D. degrees, in 1916 and
1920, respectively. During World War I, Fussell served as a lieutenant with the U.S.
Forces in France. In 1921, Fussell joined the law firm of O'Melveny and Myers as an
associate, becoming a partner in 1925. He would remain with O'Melveny and Myers throughout
his career.
Elected to the Pomona College Board of Trustees in 1943, Fussell quickly made an impact
in helping push the construction of Della Mulock Mudd Hall through to completion in time
for the 1946-47 academic year. Fussell served as vice president of the Board for three
years and in 1961, succeeded Rudolph J. Wig as Chairman of the Pomona College Board of
Trustees, serving until 1964. During his tenure, Fussell took the lead in planning a
capital gifts campaign and was able to unite the Board of Trustees in support of the
largest financial effort in the college's history.
In addition to his role on the Board of Trustees, Fussell served on numerous trustee
committees, most notably the Executive Committee, and was devoted in his support for
Pomona College. In September 1964, Fussell received an honorary doctorate of law degree
from Pomona College. Fussell was the parent of two Pomona College graduates, sons, Edwin
S. Fussell ('43) and Paul Fussell, Jr. ('45), as well as grandfather to Samuel W. Fussell
('81). Paul Fussell died on July 16, 1973.
