Scope and Content of Collection

The Jerrold "Jerry" Jacks papers relate to his interest in science fiction. Jacks (1947-1986) founded the Urania Science Fiction Club, an organization devoted to the discussion of lesbian, gay, and alternate sexuality in science fiction and fantasy, in 1980. It was the first gay and lesbian group of its kind. Jacks led Urania Club meetings, organized events, and composed A Gay and Lesbian Science Fiction and Fantasy Recommended Reading List, which he distributed to club members. He also participated in a science fiction convention, Norascon Two (1980). The bulk of the collection pertains to these activities and date, primarily, from 1980 to 1981. There are also club flyers, correspondence, drafts of an essay Jacks wrote for the Bay Area Reporter about Thomas M. Disch and Ursula K. LeGuin and miscellaneous notes and drawings.
