Series Scope and Content Summary

This series consists of Norman Mineta’s administrative files, which are primarily comprised of directories, correspondence, and phone logs from his post-White House career. This series is includes business cards from the many acquaintances Secretary Mineta came in contact with during his travels and event attendances, directories consisting of contact information and biographies from committees Mineta was involved with, phone logs, and correspondence. The correspondence consists of primarily personal incoming communication related to the various events and meetings Secretary Mineta attended. This series also contains resumes and position appointment information for hiring committees Secretary Mineta was involved with.

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains both press releases and news articles related to Secretary Mineta and his political interests as well as speeches and public relations files documenting various events. Some notable publications include Mineta’s resignation letter as Secretary of Transportation, news articles related to his attendance at events related to Japanese-American incarceration, and articles related to the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose Airport. Of note is an article, “Mineta & Slater Urge State DOTs to Innovate, Not Wait on Feds”, published by the AASHTO Journal on Nov. 5, 2010, This article describes Mineta’s views on the importance of transportation investment and the U.S. relevancy in the global market place.
Public speaking events include: the Center for Career Training & Careers 30th Annual Lunch (4-12-07); the Philip Morris USA Transportation Logistics Conference (4-26-07); Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Observance at the U.S. Department of Justice (5-8-07); Eno Transportation Foundation’s Leadership Development Conference (5-17-07); the Asian Pacific American Heritage Association Gala as Keynote Speaker (5-18-07); the Mass Casualty Preparedness & Response Forum (2-23-09); the U.C. Berkeley Graduates Convocation (12-12-09); and the 100th Anniversary of Boy Scouts of America Blue & Gold Banquet (3-20-10). Funeral eulogies, including those of his longtime friends William H. Marumoto (12-08-08) and Ed Stimpson (12-12-09) are also included.

Series III. Organizations & Committees Series III: 2005-2013

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series documents the many committees, organizations, and projects Secretary Mineta was involved with following his departure as Secretary of Transportation. Topics of interest include: United States-Japan relations; high speed, rail including the California High Speed Rail Project; Japanese Airlines (JAL) bankruptcy; Japanese-American incarceration; Asian-American culture and history, and the development of the NextGen air transportation system. Secretary Mineta’s involvement with Hill & Knowlton , a public-relations firm where he served as Vice Chairman from 2007-2012, is documented in this series. As Vice-Chairman of Hill & Knowlton, Mineta led many projects utilizing his expertise in the area of public transportation and United-States-Asian relations, including the California High Speed Rail project, the Washington Metro Transit Authority Tyson’s Corner Metro Extension Project, and the Japanese Airlines (JAL) bankruptcy. Other notable organizations he was involved with during this time period include All Nippon Airlines (ANA), Bowles Hall Alumni Association, CULCON United-States-Japan Conference on Cultural & Educational Interchange, Eno Center for Transportation, and the Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association.

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series consists of photographs as well as DVDs and VHS tapes primarily related to Japanese-American and Asian-American history and culture, as well as biographical documentaries and filmed honorary events depicting Secretary Norman Mineta. Photographs document different events Secretary Mineta was invited to speak at from the years 2007-2012. DVDs/VHS tapes include Mineta biographical documentaries such as “Norman Y. Mineta: A Boy from San Jose, 2010”, and “Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, 2007”. Other films include “The Castaway – The Story of Manjiro, 2005”, and “Only the Brave—Story of the Nisei 100th/44nd Regimental Combat Team, 2007”

Series V. Awards and Memorabilia Series V: 1995-2012

Series Scope and Contents Summary

This series consists of the many awards, certificates, and commemorative art pieces Secretary Mineta received between the years 1995-2015. The bulk of the series is comprised of framed certificates commemorating Secretary Mineta’s service throughout many organizations and events. This series also contains framed artwork such as the framed oil on canvas painting by Cao Tong “Freedom” 3-12-2001, collages consisting of newspaper articles commemorating Mineta and his service, a small collection of commemorative baseball bats, and Mineta’s canes. Some notable certificates include his appointment as Secretary of Commerce signed by President Bill Clinton as well as his appointment as Secretary of Transportation, signed by President Bush, the California Alumni Association Alumnus of the Year Award, 2001, the American Trucking Association Chairman Award for Outstanding Contribution to Truck Safety 10-31-1995, And the Japanese American Citizens League Award for Civil Rights 9-22-2001.
