Background
According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News, published April 12, 2010, the San Jose Music Study Club was founded
in 1918 by a group of residents who included a singer, choir director and instrumentalists. “It was formed for women to learn
more about all aspects of classical music and to help the community learn more about good music,” according to a member quoted
in the article. The club originally required that two-thirds of its members be performing musicians, but later relaxed that
rule.
