Abstract: This collection contains various ephemera collected by Dr. Robert D. Pepper spanning 1735-1869. Materials include: a reproduction
of the Sixth Congress of the United States, two British indenture contracts on parchment, and a 1869 map of San Francisco's
Bernal Heights.
Content Description
This collection consists of ephemera spanning 1735-1869 collected by Dr. Robert D. Pepper, SJSU Professor Emeritus of English
and Humanities. Materials include: a (very delicate) 1869 painted fabric map of San Francisco's Bernal Heights titled "Map
of a Portion of Bernal Rancho Including All of the Gift Maps, Precita Valley Lands, Etc." Compiled by John C. Colquhoun, C.E.;
a large poster reproduction of the Sixth Congress of the United States' act establishing the Library of Congress; a 1735 British
indenture contract on parchment; and a 1839 British indenture contract on parchment detailing an estate transfer from Thomas
Tindal to George Henry Nevinson.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Robert D. Pepper earned his B.A. from Drew University in 1941, his M.A. from Montclair State Teacher's College in 1949,
and earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1963. Dr. Pepper began teaching at San Jose State University as an assistant
professor of English in 1963, and is now currently Professor Emeritus of English and Humanities at SJSU.
