Series 3. Negatives

Physical Description: 2,781 film negatives in 7 boxes, 4 x 5 inches and smaller; includes some 35mm color film.

The negatives have been placed in cold storage for preservation. Arrangements for viewing negatives must be made in advance.

Scope and Contents

This series contains film negatives, with most identified by railroad name, locomotive number, date and location, which were transcribed from the original negative sleeves. Photographers were mostly unidentified, but included Donald Duke and other amateur photographers.

A. Negatives: Railroads, United States

Scope and Contents

The majority of images in this subseries show single locomotives, with some views of trains in transit or at roundhouses, rail yards or stations. Almost all were made in the 1940s-1950s by Donald Duke and other amateur photographers (chiefly uncredited). There are some copy negatives (copies of other photographs) of early locomotives.
