Historical or Biographical Note
The WILLIAM T. LEWIS was a 4-masted, steel hulled bark built in 1891 by Robert Duncan & Co. of Greenock, Scotland. The vessel
measured 279' x 42' x 24', and its gross tonnage was 2156 tons. The ship was originally named ROBERT DUNCAN and its owner
was the Robert Duncan Shipping Company of Glasgow. In 1910 the ship was sold to A.P. Rolph of Greenock and renamed the WILLIAM
T. LEWIS. In 1917, ownership transferred to J. Rolph Jr. of San Francisco.
The ship was operated by Hind & Rolph Co. and worked in lumber and general cargo trades to Australia and other countries.
In 1915, the ship was torpedoed by German warships off the coast of Ireland, but owning to its cargo of lumber it stayed afloat.
It was towed into Bantry Bay, repaired, and went back to sea. Its last voyage under sail was in 1921. It was laid up for some
years and eventually sold to Island Tug & Barge Co. in Victoria, B.C., where it was operated as a barge under the name FIBREBOARD.
The ship's figurehead is now in the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society collection in Seattle.
