Buttersworth, was recently acquired by Mystic Seaport, the maritime museum in Suutheastern Connecticut. On exhibit in the Seaport's G.W. Blunt WHite Library, the painting depicts the Mystic-built schooner DAUNTLESS, flying the New York Yacht Club burgee, vying against two unidentified schooners in a race off the Battery in New York. Careful examination of the painting reveals that Buttersworth had originally shown the DAUNTLESS and the schooner out ahead to starboard on port tack. He later altered the painting to show both vessels on starboard tack. Mystic Seaport's collection of marine paintings, exhibited in th formal exhibit area of the outdoor maritime museum, includes several other works by Buttersworth and other renown marine painters." When built by D. McKay, at East Boston, Massachusetts, she was the largest clipper ship in the world, and "considered by all who saw her as possessing great beauty of model." The ship is here pictured at New York, displaying her destination, and taking on passengers and supplies for the Pacific Coast. In 1854 she accomplished the voyage from New York to San Francisco in 89 days, 21 hours, but later eclipsed the time for all previous journeys, including her own, by repeating the run in 89 days, 8 hours.

Caption: The first Roman Catholic Church in Virginia City, Nevada, was of wood, built in 1860. After the Church was destroyed by a storm, another frame structure replaced it in 1862, known as St. Mary's in the Mountains, descriptive of its place at the 7,000 foot mountain elevation. This too was replaced, but by a larger Church composed of brick and stone, built in 1868. It burned on October 26, 1875, except for the brick walls - resting on a stone foundation which set the pattern for reconstruction the following year. Seating 750, this Gothic Church had a reed organ from 1876-1957, and contains two original stained glass windows. Father Meinecke lives in the museum - the lower half of the Church used as an art gallery. Work by more than 70 artists is displayed. Since 1963, students have studied at nearby St. Mary's Art Center, taught by professors from Nevada and California.

She was disabled off the Columbia R. about 10 days ago, the first day out for the war zone with wheat. Her foretop and topgallant masts went by the board and the main topgallant mast also went, carrying yards and hamper with them. Under a smart jury rig Capt. Rehel started for San Francisco to repair. He was hailed by the LYMAN STEWART, but refused assistance... G - Marine Exchange 1/17/58.

Scope and Content Note

Artist's conception. Photo of a painting by an unknown artist. Copy courtesy of C.W. Vennell, who was on the H.M.A.S. MELBOURNE when the rescue took place. Additional information attached to verso of the large print: "This American schooner was one of the very few sailing ships to be fitted with wireless in those days, but that alone would not have saved her when she sprang a leak in a storm 290 miles north-east of Cape Maria van Diemen on January 1922, if her aerials had been attached to the top of her mainmast, which was carried away during the storm. But it so happened that on her previous voyage her masthead had been broken off about five feet from the top, bringing it below the aerials, which were stretched between the foremast and the jigger mast. Thus, when the mainmast went overboard, the aerials were not touched and the ship was able to transmit S.O.S. messages without interruption. After the rescue of the ship's complement the commander of the Australian cruiser, believing the schooner was sinking, left her derelict. But she did not sink and months later, after drifting thousands of miles, went ashore on a Pacific Island reef."
