Two unidentified men can be seen. The one sitting, a Norwegian, is the one who painted the figurehead. Also included in the negative enclosure is a letter from Fred Klebingat to E.B. Scott dated September 26, 1967:

  • "Dear Mr. Scott,
  • Mrs. Mathilda Dring sent me this photo, to supply some information. All I note that the artists did not improve on my handy work. I used to paint it at sea. But one cannot send a man on a job like that, when the ship is at sea. In my case as Chief Mate I took my own chances. I have written in the past (these letters are on file in the Museum) that the Clyde Falls do not resemble the true falls atall? They are a pipe dream of the carver in San Francisco Mr. Lovejoy. I have written in Dogwatch how the figurehead was lost, and that this one is the last such carving that was done in San Francisco. The Museum should furnish you with xerox copies if you should desire so. At any rate my account is good reading.
  • It was Mr. Harold Underhill, who first drew my attention to the fact, that the Bas relief did not show the Clyde Falls, but was a fig of imagination.
  • The chain the men are standing on, and that supports one of the stagings are the Martingale shround. The piece of vertical iron is the dolphin striker, it riggs out the jib stays and flying jib stays that the man standing is holding on to. It prevents the jib boom from buckling. The whole rig is called the 'Martingale.' The sail above the man to the left is the Inner Jib and the one to the right is the Foretopmast staysail. The ship is moored port side to Pier 17 Honolulu the Railroad Wharf.
  • The figurehead that you see here, is now at the Museum of Science and Industry at Seattle, there is also one of the restoration as it does not resemble the original, and Mr. McCurdy would be reluctant to part with it.
  • I will mail this in Cresent City.
  • Sincerely Yours,
  • Fred K Klebingat"

  • (details about Jerry MacMullen putting a squib in paper for crew . . 'A thousand or more boys invaded the ship begging to go. From among them Capt. Moyes chose thirty-one youngsters.')
  • Four days of light variable winds in which Moyes broke in his crew. Then three long tacks brought them in sight of San Geronimo Island in Mexican waters. Capt. Moyes brought ship to anchor between dangerous Sacramento Reef and the island, a fine piece of ship handling. San Geronimo one quarter mile wide, three quarters of a mile long. Went ashore with half the crew and a wire net which was rigged between a sleeping bull and the water.
  • When he awoke and found himself surrounded by men, didn't even see the wire net which also encircled him. With a wild look and a tremendous bellow which showed large vicious yellow teeth, the bull made for the ocean, the wire deterring him about as much as a spider deters a housewife.
  • One boy had been almost directly in the path of the frenzied animal . . Frank envisioned the possibilities of danger to thirty-one of them: "Get back to the ship. The expedition is over.'
  • Boys begged Frank to extend the cruise by a trip around Guadalupe Isd. Benny disconsolate. Leisurely sail around island took a couple of weeks. Calm. Food low."

Scope and Content Note

The vessel sank in 1921. It was raised in 1924. View of the salvage activity. One of the salvage vessels, on right, is the ARBUTUS. The vessel on the left is not indentified. Information adhered to the back of the large print: "The Navy Undertakes Another Salvaging Task! The wrecked U.S.S. ALABAMA, after years beneath the waves, in Tangier Sound, is being raised by the U.S. Navy, -a great task, as the ship weighs 11,000 tons. The ALABAMA was sunk by bombs from planes directed by former Col. William Mitchell, and the raising of the ship shows that the Navy report did not give full credit in its reports to the Army as to the hit that sank the ship. The boat was sunk by the large hole torn by a bomb, under water, and not by the direct hit as stated, confirming the contention of Colonel Mitchell. Pix shows two ships engaged in the task of salvaging the ALABAMA."

The hues of the rooms, corridors and various halls are designed for simplicity and good taste... And her instant impression of magnificent strength to withstand any weather is not diminished because of the picture her fine-drawn lines give of that fleet denizen of the Pacific seas for which she is named MALOLO 'Flying Fish.' Even a casual visitor to the ship becomes filled with admiration for this huge hulk whose lines, in spite of colossal size, denote extreme speed, and whose appointments are as finely detailed as the luxurious hotels upon land."

Caption: THE NAVIGATION OF A SHIP is often a mysterious and complicated affair to the landsman. He regards is as something of a miracle that a vessel can leave port and after sailing for perhaps thousands of miles without sighting land, reach her destination safely on the other side of the world. The methods and instruments of navigation are, however, few and simple. Given a chart, a compass, a log and lead, a sextant, and a chronometer, a navigator can take his ship across the world and home again. This picture shows the German four-masted barque Padua (2,600 tons) after having sailed from Australia, a distance of some 11,000 miles, to Lundy Island (off the coast of North Devon), whence she is being towed up to Avonmouth and the port of Bristol.

Scope and Content Note

EPPLETON HALL (built 1914; paddle tugboat) can be seen aft. Additional information included inside the print enclosure: "The subject of this picture is actually the sailing vessel SORLANDET. The vessel is a Norwegian training ship for cadets, the vessel visits various parts of the British Isles and on such courtesy visits the Officers and crew are entertained by the Host authority.

  • This ship was built at Kristiansand, 1927 for the Sorlandet Seilinde Skoliskips Institution. First visited the river Tyne in 1929 and again in 1938. During World War II she was seized by the Nazis and sunk. She was subsequently refloated and recommissioned by the Norwegians.
  • The picture was actually taken when leaving the port of Sunderland after a courtesy call (not the Tyne) with the tug STAG towing ahead and the EPPLETON HALL attached aft; (It is a pity indeed that the photographer did not line up the EPPLETON HALL for better viewing) and the motor cutter approaching the port side of the ship is the Pilot Cutter preparing to take off the Pilot.
  • The tug STAG was lost in 1950 when going to the assistance of a large freighter adrift at sea in a gale; the freighter the S.S. CITY OF WINCHESTER was in tow from the river Tyne to complete the building process and broke away from the tugs in the S.W. Gale; the tug connected the towline but was dragged athwart and capsized before the towrope could be slipped.
  • STAG built for a Liverpool firm, 1897 and named WELLINGTON."

Scope and Content Note

German vessel under command of Captain Reimers. Comment typed on print enclosure: "The ELIZABETH was owned by D.H. Watjen & Co., the firm I sailed with, and was lost on the Rio de la Plata in the Fall of 1904. She was engaged also in the tobacco trade, what they call in German 'Tabaks Klipper' (Tobacco Clipper). Very likely, as the photo indicated, there is a shortage of wharf space, so they had to rig in the jibboom. There were many ships where the end of the boom was fitted with a hinge, as this photo indicates."
