The American schooner, YANKEE, here, is the most recent of the three visible wrecks on the reef off Acarus, capital of the Cook group. In the background, anchored in the open sea, is the New Zealand Government's Pacific Islands vessel MOANA ROA, its passengers and cargo having to be ferried by surf boats through a gap in the reef. - New Zealand Information Service."

Additional information included inside the print enclosure: "I have no recollection of the stranded French 4-m bque on the beach at Iquique. Surely, if there had been one, I would have either seen her, heard of her, or remembered her. Speaking of stranded French 4-m. bques, A.D. Bordes' ADOLPHE, when only two years old, was wrecked at Newcastle N.S.W. in 1904, when she dragged her anchors in the Stockton Bight, went on the Oyster Bank, and finished up, a total loss, on the northern breakwater. The wreck is still there; I saw it a few weeks ago - hull only, of course - and one can even see traces of paint on the shell-plated. Not bad after 60-odd years. I remember climbing over this wreck when I was an apprentice, in the 1920s." - Letter from Capt. John Moodie Heddle to Harold Huycke, 11/26/66. "I was on the wreck of the ADOLPHE in Newcastle in 1907. The jetty had then been built out to the ship and it was easy to get on board." - Capt. Fred Klebingat.

Additional information included inside the print enclosure: "ON THE MAINE WAYS. The 195' Inter Island steamer KINAU lies on Lyle and Sorenson's Marine ways, hauled out for a bottom copper sheathing job in the spring of 1888. Wilder Steam Navigation Company's KINAU was built by Wm. Cramp and Son in Philadelphia arriving in Honolulu November 1, 1883, with Captain Von Schmidt commanding. She operated on Inter Island runs into the late 1920's."

  • "SEVENTEEN HUNDRED TONS IN LIGHT BALLAST. 'No more than San Francisco prices,' trumpeted the advertisement announcing the new marine railways completion, in the winter of 1882, for the Hawaiian government. Promoted and originally leased by Samuel G. Wilder, of the Wilder Steamship Company who had obtained the franchise, it was constructed for the government by H.I. Crandall and then turned over to competent engineer and master shipwright James Lyle, a Nova Scotian.
  • Lyle took in Danish born Thomas Sorenson as partner under a lease agreement.
  • With a capacity of 'up to 1700 tons in light ballast' the marine ways was located at the foot of Punchbowl Street between what would become Pier's Four and Five. (1)
  • The first to be hauled on the ways, Wilder's LIKELIKE, was steam-winched up in January of 1883. On August 12, 1889, the heaviest vessel and first warship to use the facility was the U.S.S. NIPSIC, considered by the Navy a 'lame duck,' victim of the devastating hurricane at Apia Harbor, Samoa. (2)
  • It was noted at the time that 'there were a number of society belles on a barge anchored off His Majesty's Boathouse for a good view of the proceedings.'
  • Caption Notes: (1) Refer Paradise of the Pacific, January 1895, p. 14; also Wilder and Co. advertisement, 1885, and Pacific Commercial Advertiser, July 2, 1906. (2) Also given as '1500 tons in light ballast' maximum. The NIPSIC was refloated after the March 1889 typhoon and made her way under jury rig to Honolulu, a fluke-shaped horizontal rudder being improvised, parallel flukes on a 20' spar."
