Item No. F12.16084.  Wendur (built 1884; ship, 4m) alongside at Northern Pacific Pier No. 4, Seattle, WA, circa 1898

Physical Description: Black-and-white silver-gelatin photographic print., pl (10 x 8 in.) Photog. No. 3011

Scope and Content Note

Bow view. Additional information included inside the large print enclosure: "Note that the rails in the wooden rail on the topgallant foc'sle are either chain or tarred rope spliced into eyebolts in the fore and aft faces of the wooden rail stanchions. Note the 'unusual' short spreader and miniature dolphin striker on the spike bowsprit. The bowsprit footropes are made fast to the spreaders and then inboard. Note the absence of catheads and the anchor release gear in use with the starboard anchor. As there is a Spanish-American recruiting poster on the wall of the shack by the WENDUR bows, it suggests a date close to 1898." Gift - C. Hayden Bell 11/23/62.

W.G. IRWIN was built as a brigantine and re-rigged as a schooner from 1913-1926.
Vessel History: W.G. IRWIN was built as a brigantine in 1881 for J.D. Spreckels as a Hawaii sugar packet. She was later transferred to the Oceanic Steamship Co., which was largely owned by the Spreckels family. In 1901 she was sold out of the Island trade, to the Tacoma & Roche Harbor Lime Co. She was re-rigged as a three-masted schooner of 400 m capacity between September 1912 and July 1913. In 1917, she was sold for $28,000 to Capt. Alex Woodside for the offshore copra trade. She was taken over a year or so later by the Bank of Italy; and was laid up at San Francisco in July 1920, after arrival from Samoa. Two years later she was reported going to pieces rapidly, and was shortly thereafter sold to Famous-Players-Lasky and burned at Catalina, May 15, 1926.

Caption: [Front:] V27198 T Whalers Cruising in the Arctic - Dexterity Harbor and Baffin Land.

  • [Back:] These two boats cruising about in the ice-locked waters of Dexterity Harbor, off Baffin Land, are the "Diana" and the "Nove Zembla," craft made famous by Peary's voyages of Arctic exploration.
  • Baffin Land is a large island in the northern part of Canada. It is largely within the Arctic Circle. On the east it is bounded by Baffin Bay and Davis Strait, on the south by Hudson Strait, on the west by Fox Channel, Hecla Strait, Gulf of Boothia and Prince Regent Inlet, on the north by Lancaster Sound.
  • It is often necessary for a whaler to wait for some time before it even sights a whale. While they are waiting, watching and cruising they hunt for seals. After a whale has been sighted, the small boats are immediately lowered and scatter to positions where the whale is most likely to come up for his nest breath of air. When he does come up the harpooner in the boat nearest to him already waiting by his gun fires. Then if the whale is hit, as he usually is, the struggle begins. The whale dives, towing the boat after him, for there is a line attached to the harpoon. The line must be skilfully played out and drawn in and more harpoons judiciously shot before the whale finally succumbs. He is then towed off, tail first, to the big boat and tied alongside until the crew are ready to "flense" him and bring aboard the most useful parts of the body. The whale may be floated for some time by the side of the ship without endangering the value of the products obtained.
