    Administrative History

The Marine Biological Association of San Diego was established in 1903, and maintained a small library from its founding. This association became the Scripps Institution for Biological Research in 1912, and renamed to Scripps Institution of Oceanography by 1925.
In the early stages, librarians often served additional roles at SIO. Harry Beal Torrey was the first person to curate and manage the library, in addition to his academic position at SIO. By 1910, the George H. Scripps Memorial Marine Biological Laboratory, or the "Old Scripps Building," was completed. Among other things, it housed the growing SIO Library. The first freestanding library was completed in 1916, housed in the same building as the Scripps Aquarium-Museum. The library collection quickly grew and plans developed for a new library building. In 1976, the Eckart building opened as the SIO Library.
In 1960, UC Regents approved the plan for a new UC campus in San Diego. As UC San Diego libraries were planned and developed, the SIO Library served as a staging area for incoming collections. Due to increased use of digital materials and budget cuts, the UC San Diego Libraries were consolidated in 2011; and by 2012 the SIO Library was closed.
Library Directors: Harry Beal Torrey (1903-1912), Samuel Stillman Berry (1913-1914), Tillie Genter (circa 1915-1925), Ruth Ragan (1926-1949), W. Roy Holleman (1950-1962), Joseph Gantner (1963-1966), William J. Goff (1967-1993), and Peter Brueggeman (1993-2012).
