Biographical / Historical Notes
The San Diego Genealogical Society was founded in 1946 by Mrs. Alicia P. Mayer and a small group of people interested in genealogy.
Mrs. Mayer, the first President, stated the main purposes of the Society were "to promote general interest in the related
fields of genealogy, history and heraldry," to assist members with their research, and to establish a genealogical library.
Membership grew from the original 25 charter members to a total of 39 by the end of the first year. The San Diego Genealogical
Society was incorporated in 1966 as a non-profit, 501(c)(3), California corporation and the official seal was developed.
One of the original goals of the Society was to assist those people interested in genealogy, in addition to providing for
the mutual exchange of information among members. For this reason, monthly Society meetings included programs for beginners
as well as those with many years of research experience. A number of well-known experts have appeared at meetings and at special
seminars.
The Society has two publications. The Newsletter, started in 1963, contains information of general interest to the membership
and program announcements and queries. The second publication, San Diego Leaves and Saplings, published since 1972, includes
transcriptions of census, mortuary, cemetery, hospital, and many other early San Diego County records.
