Biography

Edna Bullock (May 20, 1915 - December 13, 1997) was born and raised in Hollister, California. Her father was chief of police and her mother a seamstress. An active child, Edna had a passion for dance and physical activity which engaged her throughout her life.
After earning degrees from University of California Los Angeles and University of California Berkeley, she taught physical education at Fresno High School from 1940-1943. She established a dance program and choreographed the "Sleeping Beauty Ballet."
In the fall of 1942, she met budding photographer Wynn Bullock, then a sergeant in the U.S. Army. The two were married on February 13, 1943. For the next 15 years, Edna devoted herself to being a full-time helpmate and mother, raising two daughters, Barbara and Lynn, and step daughter, Mimi.
Edna supported Wynn's career as a commercial and creative photographer by taking the role of his personal secretary and assistant. She managed the photographic concession on two military bases at Camp Cook in Santa Maria, and at Fort Ord on the Monterey Peninsula.
Edna began her own career in photography at the age of 61, in 1976, a year after Wynn died. In an amazingly short time, friends such as Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, Morley Baer, Al Weber, and Ruth Bernhard witnessed her evolution from student to fellow exhibitor.
An exceptionally prolific artist for two decades, Edna produced a wide variety of black and white imagery, including a series on landscapes, seascapes, nudes, and creative ephemera, such as flea markets.
The book, Edna's Nudes, released on her 80th birthday reflects her dancer's eye and her intuitive, direct, and humorous character.
Edna's images were displayed in over 100 individual and group exhibitions throughout the U.S. and abroad. Her final exhibition, "Edna's Portraits" spanned the entire range of her artistry and was the culmination of her short photographic career.
