Historical Background

The Border Art Workshop/Tallér de Arte Fronterízo was organized by David Avalos under the sponsorship of the Centro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego, California between June and October 1984 as a multicultural, interdisciplinary group of artists and cultural activists. The group's seven founding members were (in alphabetical order): Isaac Artenstein, David Avalos, Sara Jo Berman, Jude Eberhardt, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Victor Ochoa and Michael Schnorr. Their goal was to collaboratively examine and deconstruct the concept of the border zone--promoting discussion, representation, and exploration--through the visual arts and performance installations. Over the following two decades, as some of the founding members left the group and new artists joined, BAW/TAF continued to actively participate in multi-disciplinary exhibitions and performances throughout Southern California, the United States, and internationally, at the Venice and Sydney Biennales. A PDF guide to BAW/TAF exhibitions and installations  is available here.
In 1994, BAW/TAF drafted a group statement that emphasized their continuing efforts within binational and cross-cultural communities with the goal of expanding regional understanding. The group was committed to creating art and conditions for the viewing of art that overcame cultural barriers, despite inevitable tensions and changes over time within the collaborative itself. Michael Schnorr, as a founding member of BAW/TAF and a primary organizing force in the group's fundraising efforts, maintained much of the group's documentary record.
Schnorr's archive of BAW/TAF records, which included materials relating to his own projects and artistic career, was acquired by the UC San Diego Library following his death in 2012.

CHICANO PARK MURALS

Scope and Content of Series

Series 3) CHICANO PARK MURALS: Papers and images relating to the design, painting and restoration of murals in San Diego's Chicano Park by Michael Schnorr, such as Coatlicue, Voz Libre, Farm Worker (also known as Death of a Farm Worker), and Undocumented Worker. It also includes general reference materials, including Schnorr's notes and some newsletters and correspondence, about the murals in Chicano Park and the mural movement more generally in Southern California. The series includes material on the seismic retrofit of the access ramps to the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge in the late nineties, and files relating to Schnorr's use of a product called Vandl-Guard from Frazee Paint, which he intended to use as a graffiti and pollution-resistant coating over his murals. The product was applied to Coatlicue, Farm Workers, and others, and he alleged that it caused rapid deterioration (chipping and flaking) on the surface of the murals. Schnorr and Susan Yamagata sued the manufacturer for damages.
Arranged in two subseries: A) Documents, and B) Photographs and Slides.

VIDEO AND FILM

Scope and Content of Series

Series 7) VIDEO AND FILM: Hundreds of moving image recordings captured on a variety of original media formats, documenting a wide variety of BAW/TAF member collaborations, installations, Schnorr's own work, and additional miscellaneous footage, especially of the Mexican township of Maclovio Rojas. Many of the recordings have content that spans multiple themes, projects and installations, and recordings were sorted into similar groupings based on project wherever possible. Some of the recordings included notes or titles on the container or wrapper of the contents; these were transcribed and are included here as the given titles of the items.
A majority of the recordings could not be viewed at the time of processing due to the original media format. However, based on the notations on the cases, they were appraised and arranged as completely as possible. Many recordings were given a unique alpha-numeric identification number while they were in Schnorr's possession, and those numbers have been noted here in the descriptive record. However, as the numbers did not appear to necessarily correspond with a logical sorting arrangement, they were not employed to force an order on the materials. Some recordings may be poor quality or duplicative, and all require advance notice to arrange for the creation of digital viewing surrogates.
Arranged by format in six subseries: A) Videocassettes, B) Betacam and U-matic, C) 8mm & 16mm Films, D) Hi-8 – Organized by Project, E) Hi-8 – Miscellaneous Compilations, and F) Mini DVC (Digital Video Cassette).

Restrictions

Restrictions Apply - Original audiovisual media formats are restricted for preservation. Veiwing/listening copies may be available for researchers.
