Abstract: Since 1973, the Brand Library & Art Center and the Associates of Brand Library & Art Center have sponsored an annual juried exhibition open to artists residing in the United States. The Brand Library & Art Center is the art and music section of the Glendale Public Library and features a large professional gallery space (the Brand Library Art Galleries) and concert hall. The Associates of Brand Library, founded in 1969, is a non-profit volunteer organization whose purpose is to support the Brand Library & Art Center through sponsorship of programs and library collections. Each year, a selected juror—usually an individual well-known in the Southern California visual arts community—selects the works to be included in the annual juried exhibition at Brand Library Art Galleries. An exhibition catalog has been produced in most years since the first exhibition in 1973 (catalogs not published in 1971, 1972, 1976, 1978, and 1984). Catalogs typically include reproductions of works of art, names of all exhibitors and titles of art works, a list of awards given, a statement from the juror, as well as advertisements from local businesses and organizations.

Biography/Administrative History

The exhibition catalogs were digitized as part of the one-year grant supported California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP). The LHDRP is a multi-year program supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Leveraging the infrastructure of the California Digital Library (CDL) in partnership with Califa and Infopeople, the LHDRP explores a model to aggregate, preserve, and provide permanent public access to local history materials maintained by California cultural heritage institutions via a single statewide online access point.
