Biographical / Historical
The Zamorano Club is an organization of fine press, rare book, and manuscript collectors, founded in Los Angeles in 1928 by
Charles K. Adams, Garner A. Beckett, William W. Clary, Arthur M. Ellis, A. Bruce McCallister, Robert O. Schad, and John C.
Treanor. The club was named in honor of Agustín V. Zamorano, a provisional governor of Alta California and the state's first
printer. The Zamorano Club meets monthly during the year, excluding a summer break in the months of June, July, and August,
and has done so since its inception.
The Book Club of California is a San Francisco-based organization founded in 1912 with the purpose of promoting fine press
printing "related to the history and literature of California and the western states of America through research, publishing,
public programs, and exhibitions" (BCC website, mission statement). Dr. Edward Robeson Taylor, W. R. K. Young, John Henry
Nash, and James D. Blake were the founding members of the organization, which now numbers at nearly one thousand.

Scope and Contents
The Zamorano Club Keepsakes series contains fine press items that Dr. Earl F Nation saved during the time he was a member
of the Zamorano Club in Los Angeles, with materials ranging in publication from 1957 to 2007. The majority of the fine press
keepsakes are from the bi-annual joint meetings of the Zamorano Club and the San Francisco-based Roxburghe Club. Pamphlets
are the primary form of the fine press in this collection, although illustrations, maps, and books are present as well.

Book Club of California
Arrangement
This series is arranged in chronological order, with oversized items removed from the folders and relocated to a separate
container.
Scope and Contents
The Book Club of California series contains the annual keepsakes that were mailed directly to Dr. Earl F. Nation by the San
Francisco-based Book Club of California. The fine press found in this series is limited edition printing and leterpress exclusively
published for the BCC, on the subject of California's history, flora, and fauna. In addition to the annual illustrated booklets,
this series also houses various publication announcements, or prospectuses, from the BCC that Nation elected to keep in his
personal fine press collection. These prospectuses are organized chronologically as well.

Series 3:
Personal Effects
Scope and Contents
The Personal Effects series is a six-folder series that houses aspects of Dr. Earl F. Nation's personal life. Items include
fine press pamphlets with handwritten notes by the authors to Nation, various items documenting Nation's friendhsip with Ward
Richie, fellow fine press enthusiast, an event keepsake from a Catholic feast day that lists Dr. Nation as a guest, and various
invitations, newsletters, and prospectuses that came from organizations other than the Book Club of California.
Arrangement
Because this series is on the smaller side, and many items lack dates, materials are grouped by subject, and folders are labeled
as such instead of chronologically or alphabetically.
