Scope and Content of Collection

Joah Lowe was a gay San Francisco-based choreographer, dancer, and healer. He died in 1988 from AIDS. The collection includes material collected by Charlie Halloran, a dancer who worked with Lowe. Halloran died in 1993 from AIDS. The collection includes: theater, performance and dance ephemera, including flyers, magazines, and programs, with material related to Joah Lowe dance and lessons in the art of flying, Christopher Beck and Company, Theatre Rhinoceros, Cal Performances, and others; a costume sketch by Charlie Halloran; performance and dance production notes, including material for Fire in the Lake; a T-shirt picturing Joah Lowe; a portrait painting of Joah Lowe by Bill Samios; a small amount of correspondence; newspaper clippings related to Joah Lowe; and an oversized “death mask” (in the shape of a skull/face) used in a dance by Joah Lowe.
