Historical or Biographical Note
The cargo ship OHIOAN was built by Maryland Steel Company at Sparrows Point, Maryland, in 1914. She was operated by the American-Hawaiian
Steamship Company.
During World War I, the United States Navy acquired her for service (1918-1919). She went aground at Point Lobos, San Francisco,
California on October 7, 1936. Attempts to refloat her were unsuccessful. In March 1937, OHIOAN caught fire. Less than a year
later, a storm broke the vessel into two.
The James C. Shulze photograph collection, October 1936, (SAFR 24858, P17-003) is comprised of photographs of OHIOAN (built
