Description
This collection contains materials kept
by the Stockton Garden Club historians for some of the years between 1956 and
2009. Much of the collection focuses on the Stockton Garden Club specifically,
but some materials relate to the parent organization of the Valley Lode
District of the California Garden Clubs, Inc. The bulk of the collection
consists of scrapbooks containing photographs, correspondence, event programs
and tickets, and newspaper clippings. There is also a file on scholarships
offered by the California Garden Clubs, Inc. and the Stockton Garden Club
specifically, the latter being at San Joaquin Delta College. The collection
also contains a small number of miscellaneous brochures, pamphlets, and
descriptions of responsibilities and committees, and two photo books for the
Stockton Garden Club.
Background
The Stockton Garden Club was founded in 1926.
Their goal is to “educate and promote an interest in horticulture, gardening,
floral design, pollinators, birds, and aquatic life; to promote an appreciation
of the natural beauties found in the state of California; to encourage civic
beautification, and to assist in the conservation of our natural resources.”
Through the years, they have donated money to the Penny Pines program in
support of reforestation, sponsored three Blue Store Memorial markers in the
city of Stockton, and awarded scholarships to horticulture students at San
Joaquin Delta College, which they continue to do each year. They are an active
organization with monthly meetings, educational programs, speakers, and events.
