Biographical / Historical
Frederick A. Corr (1889-1932) was the Chief Pharmacist's Mate on the USS Tutuilla and USS Isabel on the Yangtze Patrol in
the 1920s. The Yangtze Patrol Force protected US interests and citizens on the river for nearly a century, from the 1850s
to the 1940s, one of the longest continuous US military operations. Corr was married to Lila Mae Corr (née Murphy). His wife
was killed by her father in June 1928, and Corr received the news in a letter from his mother-in-law, which he mentions in
a letter to his brother Edgar.
Scope and Contents
Materials consist primarily of letters sent by Corr to his family in the United States, mostly to his brother Edgar D. Corr
and Edgar's family. Corr's letters include descriptions of life along the river, including of American commerce (Standard
Oil's and Socony's operations), and of the beauty of the gorges. They also detail family issues related to money and insurance.
Most letters typewritten (a few handwritten) many on "USS Isabel Yangtze Patrol United States Asiatic Fleet" letterhead, some
on paper with printed Chinese motifs; all signed "Fred." Other ships and locations from which letters were mailed include:
Dollar Steamship Line; US Naval Hospital Canacao PI; USS Colorado; Receiving Barracks, Hampton Roads, Va; USS Sirius; USS
Pittsburgh; USS Guam; and USS Tutuilla. Other items include: Fourth of July 1918 celebration program, USS Wilhelmina; Ship's
Ball Programme December 5, 1918, Hotel Biltmore NY; Theatre Party and Banquet, USS Kentuckian, June 12, 1919, Globe Theatre,
NY; 10 black and white photographs taken by Corr in China; Christmas Card 1927; and Christmas Dinner Menu, USS Isabel December
1928, with Rear Admiral Stirling, Commander Yangtze Patrol listed.
