The School of Architecture and Urban Planning opened for instruction in 1966 in response to the rapid urbanization of Southern
California and the growing need in the region for architects and urban planners. The two-year master's program emphasized
design-oriented studio work based strongly on the social and technological sciences. George A. Dudley was appointed the first
dean of the school in 1964, almost two years prior to the arrival of the first students.
Record Series 493 contains "Running on Empty: The Travel Patterns of Extremely Poor People in Los Angeles," generated by students
of the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of California, Los Angeles. "Running on Empty"
was a research project conducted by twelve students as part of the completion of Master of Arts in Urban Planning degrees,
advised by Dr. Martin Wachs. Through general research and survey, students documented and analyzed "the transportation needs
of very poor people in Los Angeles County," and offered recommendations based on their findings. Files include both the final
report of the project and original survey data.
