Biographical / Historical

Alfred Henry Forrester (1804-1872) was an English author and artist, who used the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill. Forrester was born on September 10, 1804. Forrester frequently collaborated with his brother Charles Robert Forrester, who was a lawyer and writer. Crowquill's works included "Memorial of the Great Exhibition of 1851," a statuette of Wellington Bear, and Phantasmagoria of Fun. Forrester died on May 26, 1872.

Scope and Contents

Collection primarily consists of letters addressed to Forrester, many of which are replies to Forrester's requests for autographs or photographs from 1824 through 1905. Included are references to his illustrative works, literary manuscripts, and a sketchbook.

Processing Information

Processed by Huntington Library staff, June 1957. At that time, the collection was cataloged as the Alfred Henry Forrester papers. In 2001, the title was changed to the Alfred Crowquill papers. In 2020, Gina C Giang and Maggie Hughes created a finding aid derived from a legacy summary report.
