Historical Background

From the time the University of California, Irvine campus opened in 1965, the office of Student Affairs was charged with coordinating all student services provided by the university. The office provided students with services such as registration and admissions, housing and food services, financial aid, student health, and personal counseling. By 1966 the Dean of Students, the Coordinator of Academic Advising, the Foreign Student Advisor, and the Director of Student Activities had been added to the supervisory responsibilities of Student Affairs.

Collection Scope and Content Summary

This collection comprises the records of the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at the University of California, Irvine. The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs provides students with a broad range of programs and services such as the UCI Bookstore, career planning and placement, counseling, disability services, student activities, student government, student health, financial aid, admissions, and other student support services.
An addition to the collection includes material from the administration of former UC Irvine Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Manuel Gomez, from 1997-2011. The addition consists primarily of correspondence, reports, research materials, and administrative policy and committee materials dealing with financial aid, academic planning, and undergraduate admissions.
An addition consists of records from the office's communications division, from 1997-2009. Materials include promotional material and photographs from the office's annual service awards event.
An addition to the collection includes material from the administration of former UC Irvine Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Manuel Gomez, from 1992-2006, bulk 1992-1996. The addition consists primarily of clippings, reports, and correspondence related to Affirmative Action and California Proposition 209.
An addition to the collection contains photographs of Manuel Gomez and other administrators, student activities, demolition of old student center and opening of new one, anteater terrace installation, student move in and welcome week, Dynes' visit, aerial views of campus, and photographs of other events. It also contains brochures of student center, newsletters, and reports.
An addition to the collection contains incoming and outgoing chron files for Vice Chancellor Horace Mitchell, as well as general correspondence (1987-1998).
