In the 90s Chibbi traveled with Gerdes to Germany when she couldn't find a cat sitter, from family accounts he enjoyed it and was popular with the German relatives. Digital Files 2004-2020 bulk 2012-2019

Physical Description: 226 GB 6194 digital files

Conditions Governing Access

Digital files are available in the UCSC Special Collections and Archives reading room. Some files may require reformatting before they can be accessed. Technical limitations may hinder the Library's ability to provide access to some digital files. Access to digital files on original carriers is prohibited; users must request to view access copies. Contact Special Collections and Archives in advance to request access to digital files.

Scope and Contents

This series contains born-digital photographs, scanned film images, and digital files on Gerdes's professional work, primarily beginning in 2007 when Gerdes began creating photographs with a digital camera. Formats include TIFF, JPEG, PDF, and Apple Pages files.

Arrangement

This series is arranged in 4 sub-series:
  • Sub-series 1: Digital Capture Photographs
  • Sub-series 2: Professional Files
  • Sub-series 3: Scanned Film
  • Sub-series 4: Snapshots of Ingeborg and Friends
Files in each sub-series are in their original arrangement.

Processing Information

The digital materials in this collection were processed by Alix Norton in 2022-2023. Digital files were transferred from one external hard drive in June 2022 via logical copy. Digital photograph files in RAW format, Adobe Lightroom files, and materials marked as restricted by the Gerdes Trust on the hard drive were not transferred. Scanned film photographs were not transferred if they were identified by the Trust as being well represented in the Exhibition Prints series. Tools used in the analysis of files included DROID and TreeSize Pro to identify duplicate files and calculate file sizes, and Print Window to create a file directory PDF. Original order of the digital material, including file names and folder arrangement, has been retained without intervention by archives staff, with the following exceptions: the four sub-series folders (Digital Capture Photographs, Professional Files, Scanned Film, Snapshots of Ingeborg and Friends) were renamed for clarification, and some file names were edited to remove non-ASCII characters.

Other Finding Aids

For a complete file directory listing of Series 8: Digital Files, see the following guide:

Digital Capture Photographs

Physical Description: 131.8 GB 5231 digital files

Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains photographs originally captured via digital camera in their final processed version. Work series represented in this sub-series are Berlin 2012-2017, Compost, East Bay, Germany Baltic, Golden Gate Fields, Mission, Out West in Color, and SF Chinatown. Gerdes utilized Adobe Lightroom to correct and edit RAW photograph files, then exported them in TIFF or JPEG format. Most files in this sub-series are in TIFF format, with some JPEG files included. Photographs in RAW format are not included.

Professional Files

Physical Description: 2 GB 311 digital files

Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains digital, non-photographic files created by Gerdes in her professional work, including biographies and curricula vitae, artist's statements, and presentation slides for a May 2019 lecture at the San Francisco Art Institute for the San Francisco PhotoAlliance, which was her last major public presentation and provided an overview of her life's work and career.

Scanned Film

Physical Description: 90.5 GB 623 digital files

Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains photographs scanned from film negatives from work series (Mission, Out West, Out West in Color, SF in the 1970s and 1980s, DuMont) where few gelatin silver prints exist, and where a large amount of new material was scanned that was not previously printed. Gerdes presumably used negative scanning as an opportunity to re-evaluate her earlier work and select images which she had not previously printed, such as the series SF in the 1970s, from which only a small number of darkroom prints exist. The sub-series only includes final (i.e. corrected, proofed, edited) images ready to print; raw, unedited scans are not included. Some files have named titles, and others have a number prefix which corresponds to Gerdes's film coding system of year/film roll. Most files in this sub-series are in TIFF format, with some JPEG files included.

Snapshots of Ingeborg and Friends

Physical Description: 1.7 GB 29 digital files

Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains "snapshot" photographs of Gerdes, her friends, and colleagues. Included are some scans from film negatives and prints, but most images in this sub-series were captured with a digital camera. Some of the images scanned from prints include portraits of Gerdes working in the desert in the 1980s captured by her late husband Jyo Koshida.
