    Historical Background

    Khmer Arts is an independent non-profit organization founded in 2002 by Sophiline Cheam Shapiro and John Shapiro that is based in Long Beach, California, and in Takhmao, Cambodia. In Cambodia, Khmer Arts is recognized as one of the most important centers for advanced training in dance and the creation and presentation of new work in the classical form. Khmer Arts is the producer of the internationally acclaimed Khmer Arts Ensemble, conducts media projects, and in 2008 launched a research and archiving program.
